Heart disease is the #1 killer of both men and women. In the U.S., one person dies every 34 seconds as a result of it.

Here are 5 things to start doing NOW to protect your heart:

  1. Exercise most days of the week.
  2. Eat a healthy, whole-foods-based diet that’s low in sugar and sodium, and rich in vitamins and minerals.
  3. Limit alcohol. Just 2-3 drinks in one sitting can raise your blood pressure.
  4. Stand up more. Research shows that sitting for extended periods isn’t good for your heart, even if you work out.
  5. Weird & Random: Go easy on the black licorice. It contains glycyrrhizic acid, which can raise your blood pressure even if it’s usually normal.
